2. What finishes are available?

The lacquer range includes Satin, Matt, and Gloss, allowing you to choose the desired finish for your project.

3. Can it be used on multiple surfaces?

Yes. It is suitable for wood, metal, hard plastics, unglazed ceramics, masonry, and other common surfaces, whether previously painted or not.

4. Does it yellow over time?

No. JENOLITE Clear Lacquer has a non-yellowing formulation, keeping surfaces looking fresh and vibrant for years.

5. How long does it take to dry and cure?

  • Touch dry: Approximately 20–30 minutes between coats.
  • Fully hardened: 24 hours for maximum durability and protection.

6. How do I apply the lacquer?

  1. Shake the can thoroughly.
  2. Spray evenly from a distance of 25–30 cm in 2–3 thin coats, allowing 20–30 minutes between coats.
  3. For previously coated surfaces, lightly sand with 1200–1500 grit paper for a smoother base and higher gloss.

7. Can it be applied over existing alkyd paints?

Yes, but always test in an inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility. Look for wrinkling or other surface defects before applying to the full area.

8. Does it provide protection against the elements?

Yes. The lacquer is highly durable, resistant to weather, UV damage, and corrosion, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

9. Is it suitable for DIY use?

Absolutely. The aerosol format allows for easy, even application, making it ideal for DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike.

10. How should I store the lacquer?

Store in a cool, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight. To prevent nozzle blockages, invert the can and spray for 2 seconds after use.

11. Coverage per can?

A 500ml aerosol typically covers 2–3 m², depending on the surface texture, number of coats, and application technique.

12. What causes an orange peel effect when applying lacquer?

What is orange peel?

Orange peel is a textured finish that looks uneven or dimpled, similar to the surface of an orange skin. It can happen when lacquer does not flow out smoothly after application.

What causes orange peel?

Common causes include spraying too far from the surface, applying coats too heavily or too lightly, poor surface preparation, unsuitable temperature or humidity, or using incompatible paint and lacquer systems.

How can I avoid orange peel when lacquering a painted surface?

Ensure the painted surface is fully dry and cured before applying lacquer. Apply several light, even coats, keeping the spray can around 20–30cm from the surface. Use smooth overlapping passes and allow the correct flash-off time between coats.

Does temperature affect the finish?

Yes. Avoid applying lacquer in very cold, hot, humid or windy conditions. These can cause the lacquer to dry too quickly or unevenly, increasing the risk of orange peel.

Can orange peel be fixed?

Yes. Allow the lacquer to fully cure, then lightly wet sand the surface with very fine abrasive paper before applying further light coats if required.

Best tip:

Always test first on a small hidden area and use compatible paint and lacquer systems wherever possible.

13. Where is it made?

JENOLITE Clear Lacquer is Made in Great Britain, ensuring high quality and reliable performance.

1. Prepare the surface

Ensure paint is fully cured before application (minimum 24-48hrs). Lightly sanding existing coatings with fine wet and dry paper (1200 – 1500 grit) will provide a smoother base and subsequent higher gloss finish. Shake can thoroughly. Hold upright, and apply very light coat from a distance of 25 to 30cm. Gradually build up several light coats and avoid heavy, wet applications. Allow 10-15 mins between each application. Allow 24 hours to fully harden.

2. For application when over-coating

Where over-coating of a previously applied alkyd coating is suspected, always test for compatibility by applying several coats of clear lacquer in an inconspicuous area, and allow to dry thoroughly to establish absence of wrinkling and other surface defects.

3. Storage & Reuse

To prevent blockages, invert the can after use and spray for 2 seconds. This aerosol should be stored out of direct sunlight, in a cool well ventilated place.
